Walking in a Winter Wonderland

April 2, 2020

Two days into our Bavarian adventure, and aside from a slight dusting on faraway mountains, we had yet to find the snowy magical wonderland I’d been dreaming of.

That was until, on our last day, I opened the curtains of our hotel room in Grainau and laid my eyes on a blanket of white…

So we dug out our gloves, threw on our coats, and prayed that our less-than-adequate shoes would hold up for our wander into Narnia!

Fortunately we didn’t have to wander too far, as our stay at Hotel am Badersee was set within a woodland scene that wouldn’t look out of place on a Christmas card.

We followed the path through the dusted pine trees, watching as soft snowflakes silently fell on the surface of a crystal clear lake.

We truly were walking in a Winter Wonderland!

Gradually the snow stopped falling and the clouds started to lift, revealing the towering peak of Zugspitze looming high above the forest.

Time to make the most of those glimpses of blue skies! We hopped into the car and carefully braved the icy roads over to the nearby lake of Eibsee.

Crunching through the fresh snow alongside the edge of the lake, we passed by the friendly smiles of welcoming locals.

It wasn’t long before we stumbled across another icy gem hidden within the trees. The frozen lake of Frillensee, silently laying beneath the foot of Zugspitze.

Unfortunately the beauty of our surroundings couldn’t distract us from our inadequate, not-made-for-snow shoes. Feet soaked, we admitted defeat, and turned around to make our way back to the car.

Sadly, our time in Bavaria was coming to an end, and we reluctantly left the snowy mountains behind to start the journey back to Munich for our flight home.

Our time in Winter Wonderland may have been short, but it certainly was the sprinkling on top of a much-needed break away from city life. Until next time, Bavaria…
